Slowly, Leo switched off his phone and placed it gently on the bed. He picked up his combat study book from yesterday, stepped down with it, opened his bag to return the book, neatly made his bed, and folded his blanket. He took out a brand-new army patrol cap from his bag and placed it on his head, then walked outside without even glancing at where the others were.
They watched him until he stepped out. Vash said, "Awww, so he exits through the door, although it feels like he just vanishes." Zaysh glared at him and replied, "You have no sense. Of course, he exits through the door; the mystery is which path he takes." He finished speaking, zipped up his bag, pulled out a single biscuit, and headed outside.
"Wait for me," Vash said, heading toward Noor’s bed. "Hurry up," urged Zaysh, who was already waiting outside by the doorway.
Just as Zaysh stood there, their neighbor Unays rushed past them, hurrying back into his room. Zaysh watched him intently, realizing then that Unays must be coming straight from a workout. So even in the dead of night, he doesn't sleep? He sneaks out to train himself? Wow, this guy is really ambitious and full of new tactics.
He stood quietly, wondering if he should also start training himself in secret at night after everyone else fell asleep. At that exact moment, Vash patted his shoulder and said, "Let's go, Noor refuses to wake up."
"I already told you he wouldn't wake up. Just leave him; his body will teach him a lesson."
Vash was extremely compassionate. He paused for a moment, a look of sympathy crossing his face, and said, "But we shouldn't just abandon him like this."
"What, are you his father?" Zaysh retorted. Vash quickly shook his head. "No, but here we are brothers. We became family since we have no parents here."
Zaysh walked ahead, saying, "Well, then stay behind and don't come if Noor won't wake up. Who told you that people help each other during training at a military camp? Though you're a newcomer, you'll soon learn how things work here. If you help someone and get assigned their punishment workout until you're half-dead, you'll understand what I mean." He kept talking as he walked. Vash quickly hurried after him, his heart heavy with sympathy for Noor.
They headed straight for the mosque, as the call to prayer had just been made, and the congregation was already preparing to start the prayer.
After finishing the prayer, they stepped outside, each of them stretching because of the exhaustion from yesterday. Their bodies were stiff and sore, with some groaning, some complaining about their backs, as expected of recruits experiencing military discipline for the first time.
Right in front of them stood the Captain, radiating pure heroism and embodying yesterday's strictness. In a booming, stern voice, he shouted, "1, 2, 3, start!"
As soon as he shouted "start," they opened their mouths and began singing the military anthem:
We march through fire, through storm and rain, With steel in heart, we bear the pain, For land and honor, we stand so tall, United as one, we'll never fall. Oh, we rise, we fight, we stand as one, Through darkest nights, til battle's won. With fearless hearts, our banners wave, We are the strong, we are the brave! Our boots leave echoes on the ground, A thunderous beat, a mighty sound. No chains can break the will we hold, Our spirit fierce, our hearts like gold. Through blood and dust, through fire and war, We march ahead, forevermore. For freedom's call, for justice true, Our oath is strong, we'll see it through. Oh, we rise, we fight, we stand as one, Through darkest nights, til battle's won, With fearless hearts, our banners wave, We are the strong, we are the brave!
Without wasting a second after they finished, the Captain announced, "Today is your second day at the MILITARY CAMP. Today, you will repeat yesterday's training for two full weeks, but starting today, the training will be intensified to build your endurance and resilience. Your physical hardship will increase. Today's training is different from yesterday's; today, you are required to run 5 kilometers instead of yesterday's two. Furthermore, there is a time limit. Your time starts counting down right from this moment, so put in your best effort, take your positions, and get ready!" he commanded loudly to steel their hearts, then paused briefly to scan their faces.
His gaze finally landed on Noor, who was standing at the end of the line, drenched in sweat. Noor had just arrived, panting heavily just like the previous day. He had refused to get up, and when the Commander stepped on him, he panicked and fainted right there. Consequently, the Commander had him dragged to a water tap and doused in cold water, just like yesterday. Now, poor guy, he looked completely shriveled up like a washed goat in an ice bath—truly a pitiful sight.
The Captain paused for a moment, looked at Noor, and then secretly glanced at Leo, who stood nearby with his hands in his pockets like someone deep in thought.
"I repeat. Unlike yesterday, today you must run continuously for five kilometers without stopping. You have a countdown timer, and if time runs out before you reach the finish line, anyone left behind will have to restart from the very beginning within that exact same time limit—no extra time added. If you fail again, you restart again! You must complete it within the allotted time, or you sleep right here, and there is no turning back!"
He repeated his warning specifically because of Noor, observing that the young man was completely mentally disengaged and utterly terrified.
"Ready!" he commanded in a harsh tone.
Immediately, they tightened their stances and braced themselves. "Go!" he shouted at the top of his lungs. With lightning speed, they burst forward into a run. At first, Noor pushed hard and was even among the front-runners. After running about three kilometers, however, he began to drop backward.
He wasn't the only one; many of the soldiers fell behind during the run. After about 10 minutes of running, their knees began to tremble, but no one was allowed to stop. They had to keep running, or else restart from the beginning. This was the place where they say: NO MERCY, NO FAMILIARITY!
Right at that moment, three young men dropped to their knees on the ground, completely exhausted and unable to continue running! Noor was among those who collapsed because he had never run this far before and lacked the endurance. Yesterday had just been a walk, not a sprint!
As soon as they fell, the Captain, who was following closely behind, ordered some elite soldiers to pick them up and drag them back to the starting line to begin anew. At first, Noor thought it was a joke when they said those who fell had to restart. He didn't know that at the MILITARY CAMP, there are no jokes! Orders are absolute with no exceptions. Today, he finally witnessed that there is no mercy in the military. He started crying and weeping, begging them to let him continue without restarting! But no one listened to him. The soldiers assigned to drag him back had no pity; they hauled him back to the start and forced him to run under the threat of severe whip lashes. Noor's legs felt like they were about to snap, and his entire body shook violently! Zaysh and the others had already reached the finish line while Noor and the others were just starting over. Let us follow Zaysh and his group for now, before returning to Noor later.
Upon reaching the finish line, each of them stopped. Those who needed to vomit rushed to the sides, while those who collapsed hit the ground, breathing heavily. Even Leo knelt on the ground today because of how grueling the training was.
As soon as the Captain arrived, he gave them a three-minute break to stand up, drink water, and get ready to run back to where they started. WHAT A HEAVY TRIAL!
Immediately, some of their hearts began to waiver regarding military life, and a few felt like running back home, unable to endure the relentless hardship and the lack of rest. They didn't understand that if they were constantly allowed to rest, the training would be useless because their bodies would never adapt or build endurance. Those breaks would only make their immune systems lazy and weak! That is why there was no rest—one grueling task flowed directly into the next until their bodies fully absorbed the torture.
Quickly, they drank the water prepared for them before arriving. Then, they resumed from where they stopped. On their way back, three kilometers from the starting point, they crossed paths with Noor and the others. Noor was crying as if his life were slipping away, unable to see straight, running blindly. It was clear he had collapsed again and been sent back to the start, even though by now they should have covered over four kilometers.
Zaynash and Vash felt deep pity for Noor, wishing they could take the burden off him, but it was impossible. Vash's eyes even welled up heavily with tears.
When they returned, what awaited them next? Crawling under fire simulation—crawling beneath electrified/barbed wire nets known as the "wire of fire." Unlike yesterday's normal rope obstacle, this was OUT OF YOUR SENSES!
They were led to an open field laid with heavy-duty ropes where they had to crawl underneath through muddy soil. Elite soldiers stood on both sides spraying water like heavy rain to make the crawl even more grueling. They had to crawl continuously for 30 meters without standing up. If you stood up, the overhead wires featured sharp, thorny metal barbs that would pierce your skin—hence the name "fire," due to its intensity. If you made a mistake and these spikes snagged your hands and body, you would bleed or get injured, yet you were still required to keep training.
They plunged into this area and began. At this point, many of the youths cried—crying heavily like grown men experiencing pain they had never imagined. Yet, despite the tears, they persevered and pushed through to the end.
Next, they were taken to a massive area, made to stand in silence, and soldiers came around to blindfold them with military head-wraps. They were about to execute blindfolded navigation—navigating through darkness, unlike yesterday's small mountain treks.
Once blindfolded with zero visibility, they were loaded into military trucks and driven into a dense, dark forest filled with towering trees and thick canopy foliage, located right within the barracks—a specialized zone for training young recruits.
Here, the Captain commanded everyone to climb over the rocks before them and do whatever it took to navigate their way out of the area. He added that there were rocks, trees, and pits—some filled with water, some dry—and they had to find their way out of the forest.
Poor souls! Without sight and completely unfamiliar with the terrain, they had no map to guide themselves out. Now, they had to rely solely on the sound of the Captain's voice, the breathing sounds of their comrades, and groping through the dark. Making a mistake meant being sent back to the start.
They were terrified, and many felt like giving up. Seeing this, the Captain cleared his throat and said, "This training teaches you self-reliance. You will be able to engage in close-quarters combat just by hearing someone's breath; you will be able to fight in the jungle without fear or panic. This teaches you how to fight using only hearing and movement. So, get ready!"
Hearing his words, they strengthened their hearts, persevered, braced themselves, and let out a collective sigh of relief. The Captain then ordered them to begin. They started groping around, some bumping into each other, while others fell to the ground or smashed against tree trunks almost immediately.
They had only 30 minutes to escape the forest, which made them focus intensely. However, they sustained injuries from falling and striking rocks and trees, leaving them completely disoriented by the time they emerged.
Once outside, their blindfolds were removed. Each person quickly looked around, breathing heavily. Water was provided, and they were given a five-minute break. By now, they were starting to get used to the pace, so they didn't panic when told they only had five minutes.
Some, like Leo, Zaynash, and Unays, quickly rushed to stand up first to continue the training. Many youth soldiers sustained cuts on their hands and foreheads, but the Captain ignored it—though he saw it—and simply ordered them back onto the trucks to return.
With great difficulty, some managed to stand, but there was not a shred of pity in the eyes of their superiors. It was as if they didn't even notice the pain, yet every single movement was closely watched by the military generals.
They were utterly shocked when they were brought to a skyscraper—a building far taller than yesterday's, dwarfing every other structure at the military camp. They exchanged glances before fixing their eyes on the Captain, who stood with his arms folded across his chest. Seeing them stare, he gestured toward the building, signaling them to climb. They had no choice but to sprint up the stairs; no games were played here, regardless of how exhausted they were.
Here, they were taught how to conquer fear. They had to climb to the very top of the tall building, stand completely motionless, and then cross a tightrope suspended from one building to the other.
Anyone who showed fear was left up there until the fear was completely gone. Many of their bodies trembled with terror, but they forced themselves to endure. For many, this specific exercise hardened their hearts, instantly stripping away any lingering fear of death. Imagine climbing a skyscraper and walking across a thin rope to another building—naturally, hearts had to harden against pity and fear!
After all that suffering, they were taught how to handle small firearms, building on yesterday's instruction. They practiced holding them and reloading magazines within a mere two minutes. Anyone who failed to meet the time limit was punished with extra training—climbing the building, crawling in the mud, or push-ups. The most proficient trainees were given the privilege of leading their peers, which drove everyone to work harder.
The Captain watched everyone's movements closely. From the way Leo effortlessly swapped the bullet magazine of his gun, the Captain realized this wasn't the guy's first time handling a weapon. He clearly knew what he was doing, changing his bullets in under a minute. Not just the Captain, but even the senior officers monitoring the recruits were startled by Leo's proficiency. It raised deep suspicions about him because he wasn't a local citizen; he had applied specifically from the AVARIS MILITARY ACADEMY—a world-renowned institution—insisting on coming to undergo their training despite opposition back home. Seeing his stubborn determination, they had eventually let him come.
To cut a long story short, that was how their second day at the military camp went as they endured continuous training. Afterward, just like the previous day, they returned to their rooms at 8:30 PM after Isha prayers. Upon entering, they showered and prepared for bed.
However, when they came in, Noor wasn't there, and they didn't ask where he was. They went ahead with their bedtime preparations. While getting ready, Noor walked in accompanied by two soldiers. He had sustained a severe injury to his leg in the blindfolded jungle exercise—he stepped on a sharp piece of metal that pierced deep near his ankle, bypassing his boot. It was a wound that couldn't be ignored, so the soldiers had taken him to the military hospital to clean and dress it properly to prevent infection.
The soldiers escorted him inside, turned around, and left. Vash and Zaysh rushed over to him immediately, supporting him and asking what happened. His eyes were heavily swollen from intense crying, and his beautiful, feminine pink lips were badly chewed up because he had bitten them relentlessly while enduring the pain, even splitting the corners of his mouth.
They helped him to his bed, laid him down, and kept asking what happened. Closing his eyes, he recounted the immense torture he went through. He had to repeat the initial run five times, crawl through the muddy soil three times, and navigate that forest six times over before getting injured. In the process, he stepped on a razor-sharp piece of metal that pierced his leg right near the ankle bone.
Hearing his story filled them with deep sympathy, and they repeatedly apologized to him. Together, they prepared warm bathwater and supported him into the bathroom to shower. Throughout all of this, Leo sat quietly studying the weapon manuals from today's instruction, reviewing yesterday's lessons to master them thoroughly. He didn't even lift his head to look at them, because he hadn't come to the military camp to make friends—he came for training.
Once Noor finished his bath and changed into clean clothes, each of them climbed onto their beds and pulled out their phones like gadgets. Noor turned his phone on first. Before phones were distributed, they had been strictly warned that phones could only be turned on at night before sleeping, and must be switched off immediately after morning physical training until they returned to the room.
Zaynash, however, refused to take out his phone because he felt shy. Everyone else had large, high-end smartphones belonging to wealthy families, while his was outdated and basic, making him embarrassed to display it.
As soon as Noor turned on his phone and enabled mobile data, messages flooded in like a torrent—mostly from his female siblings sending messages crying about how much they missed him. Ignoring the rest, he tapped directly on the contact labeled "My Dad." He initiated a video call to that number, adjusting his posture comfortably on the bed while wincing and biting his lips due to his aching body.
The call was answered on the first ring. Although the room was well-lit, Noor's face wasn't very clear on the screen, so he switched on his front camera flash. His eyes landed on a handsome, middle-aged man lying down, looking remarkably like him—fair-complexioned with wide, bright eyes. The man looked extremely handsome.
Noor shot the man a mock glare before saying, "My dad, haven't you slept yet?"
A cool, gentle smile spread across the man's face as he replied, "I'm waiting for your call, how can I sleep?"
Noor glared at him again. "Daddy, military camp is so difficult. I can't endure this; come and pick me up." He ended the sentence with a frail voice.
"Pleasure, you will get used to it very soon," his dad replied smoothly. When Noor opened his mouth to argue, his dad quickly interrupted, "No, just tell me what successes you achieved today."
Pouting his lips, Noor answered, "A lot, my hero."
A charming smile crossed his dad's face. "That is my son. I know you will succeed. Try to bring us good results."
"I will try my best, dad. Where are my aunts?"
"They're not here; they're in their room. But Lisa isn't around."
Noor paused for a moment, then said, "Dad, here are my friends that I met here. They help me, and they're so kind and perfect." He turned his phone around to show his dad Zaynash and the others lying quietly on their beds.
"Zaynash, this is my dad. Greet him," he said, getting off the lower bed eagerly and handing the phone to Zaysh. Zaysh took it, and they exchanged polite greetings. After that, Zaysh passed the phone to Vash, and they greeted each other too. Even though they didn't talk much with Nirash, Noor felt a sudden urge to bring the phone to Nirash to greet his dad. Part of him said no, while another part urged him to go, believing Nirash would accept. Steeling himself, he walked over to Leo's bed.
He greeted Leo formally as if entering a separate room—unlike how he casually approached Vash and the others. Vash and the others instantly raised their heads, watching closely to see if Leo would take the phone or reject it.
Standing before Leo's bed, Noor said, "Here is my dad, greet him."
Leo lay quietly, with his textbook shielding his face like he was sleeping. Though his eyes were wide open, there was no sign he would answer Noor. Noor stood in silence, a heavy sense of disappointment washing over him because of Leo's cold behavior, but what could they do? They had to exercise patience. They didn't even know Leo's name, yet they shared a room.
Noticing the silence, his dad asked, "Are you okay, Pleasure?"
"Yes, dad," Noor replied quickly, turning away and walking back.
"Is there any problem?" his dad asked.
Noor quickly shook his head to signal no, then climbed back onto his bed, heartbroken. They continued talking with his dad until Zaynash and the others fell asleep. They had spent two full hours chatting, reflecting a deep bond of love and affection between father and son. Eventually, they said their goodbyes, he ended the call, switched off his phone completely, and drifted off to sleep. The room fell utterly silent as everyone, including Leo, fell fast asleep.

Summary
In this chapter, the narrative follows the brutal, relentless second day of military training at the camp. Leo continues to stand out as a mysterious, highly skilled recruit who quietly pushes his limits—even sneaking out for midnight training—while showing absolute detachment from social pleasantries. Meanwhile, Noor struggles immensely with the extreme physical demands, collapsing during a gruelling five-kilometer run, crawling through barbed-wire mud pits, and navigating a blindfolded forest obstacle course where he severely injures his leg on a sharp metal shard.
Despite his agonizing pain and emotional tears, Noor is shown immense compassion and brotherhood by his roommates, Zaysh and Vash, who comfort him and help him through his ordeal. Later that night, the recruits use their permitted phone time to connect with family. Noor shares a heartwarming video call with his father, introducing his new friends. However, his attempt to bridge the gap with the aloof Leo is met with cold silence. The chapter concludes with the recruits falling into an exhausted sleep, preparing for another grueling day, while briefly introducing a shift in setting to New York's Crystal Palace.
Character & Scene Description
1. The Setting (The Military Camp & Training Grounds)
- Atmosphere: Unforgiving, harsh, and uncompromising. The camp operates under strict military precision where weakness is met with immediate repetition and physical correction. There is "no mercy and no familiarity."
- Key Locations:
- The Obstacle Course: Features punishing 5km runs, muddy wire crawls ("wire of fire" with barbed thorns), and dark jungle blindfolded navigation.
- The Skyscraper: A towering structure used to break recruits' fear of heights through tightrope walking.
- The Barracks Room: A shared living space where contrasting personalities (the warm-hearted Vash and Zaysh, the struggling Noor, and the isolated, elite Leo) coexist.
2. Key Characters
- Leo: Stoic, fiercely independent, and exceptionally skilled. He treats the camp purely as a training ground, effortlessly handling advanced firearm mechanics (reloading in under a minute) and training in secret at night. His background hints at elite prior experience, drawing suspicion from senior officers.
- Noor: Soft-hearted, vulnerable, and deeply sheltered. Struggling severely with the military regimen, he frequently collapses and cries from exhaustion. However, he maintains a close, loving relationship with his wealthy father.
- Zaysh & Vash: Loyal and compassionate roommates. While Zaysh is more cynical and realistic about military harshness, Vash is deeply empathetic, driving them to support Noor through his physical suffering.
- The Captain: Stern, emotionless, and commanding. He embodies military discipline, showing zero tolerance for failure or weakness while closely observing the recruits' progression.
Analytics & Thematic Analysis
1. Major Themes
- Camaraderie vs. Isolation: The chapter highlights two contrasting approaches to survival in a harsh environment. On one hand, Noor, Zaysh, and Vash form a supportive, brotherly bond that helps them endure emotional and physical strain. On the other hand, Leo embodies radical individualism, isolating himself to focus entirely on personal mastery.
- Transformation Through Suffering: The narrative heavily emphasizes the psychological and physical breakdown required to forge a soldier. The instructors deliberately deny rest, arguing that comfort breeds weakness and that true resilience is born only through repeated, structured agony.
- Class & Privilege Disparities: Subtle details—such as Zaynash feeling insecure about his basic phone compared to his peers' high-end devices, and Noor's wealthy background contrasted with the brutal equalizer of military training—highlight how the camp strips away societal status.
2. Narrative Structure & Pacing
- Pacing Shift: The chapter transitions seamlessly from high-octane, fast-paced physical action (the 5km run, crawling simulations, and blindfolded jungle navigation) to an intimate, emotional denouement (Noor's injury recovery and his phone call with his father).
- Foreshadowing & Mystery: Leo's advanced weapon proficiency, his secret nighttime conditioning, and his unexplained background (originating outside the local system) build dramatic tension, leaving the reader anticipating the revelation of his true identity.
