Description
"This is a total insult to us! Did you forget that she brought us all together just to insult everyone, mother?"
"Oh, whatever she says, I swear without taking a false oath, you are the one who brought Jaririya into this house, Asabe! I know who you are, and I know you are capable of doing even worse than this."
"So what if I did, Ladidi? Is there anything you can actually do about it, even if I am the one who did it?"
Just as she was about to speak, Binta and Amina walked into the compound, hurling insults at each other as if they were about to start a physical fight.
Ladidi turned around and snapped:
"Hey! Stop it! What is the meaning of this between the two of you?"
Amina ran over to her, bursting into tears, and said:
"Inna, did you hear how Binta swore that even if it kills her, she will ruin my marriage to Sule today, and that I would witness it?"
"Well, they have already ruined it, Amina. Just now, Sule’s mother stormed out of this house, cursing us and saying that whatever was done to her son must be undone immediately—otherwise, the authorities will intervene and force us apart. That’s why I simply told her to take her son back and leave since we are done with him."
"Innalillahi wa'inna ilaihir raju'un! Inna, you actually told her that?! I am finished! Your wish has finally come true, Binta!"
She finished speaking as a sudden wave of dizziness overwhelmed her, and she collapsed toward the ground. Inna Ladidi caught her with lightning speed, uttering a loud exclamation of shock and shouting:
"Goodness gracious me, Ladidi! What am I seeing? Amina, you are fainting over some man just like that? As long as we are breathing, rest assured you will marry a proper husband fit for your status. Those jealous haters can just drop dead!"
"Mtswww, as if that's ever going to happen," Binta muttered under her breath.
"What did you just say, you ill-mannered brat from a family of insolence? I am way above your level, and the mother who brought you into this world is my absolute equal—do you understand me? Therefore, right this very second, I can throw you out, Binta. I will not tolerate disrespect!" Inna Ladidi yelled, pointing a finger at Binta, her entire body trembling with rage.
Amina struggled to her feet, still feeling quite dizzy. She glared at Binta, feeling an intense urge to grab her and deliver a brutal beating that would leave her unable to get up.
"No, I don't understand, Ladidi! Are you letting her run her mouth like that while you just watch?"
"Kware indeed! Or do you think I am incapable of it?"
"I swear by Almighty God, even the worst of the worst is way out of your league, let alone an amateur! Your own daughter's body will teach her a lesson soon enough, because I am not a coward who will stand by and watch you beat my daughter without taking action. Does that mean I don't know the pain of childbirth?"
"Say whatever you want, Asabe, but warn your daughter: if she keeps playing with fire, she should watch out for Suri. Because I swear, it is impossible for my own flesh and blood to stand here and insult me without me getting back at her!"
"You and I are going inside," Inna Asabe said, grabbing Binta's hand and pulling her into the room.
As soon as they entered, they burst out laughing together loud enough for Inna Ladidi and Amina to hear clearly.
"Inna, did you hear that malicious laughter? They are rejoicing over our misfortune!"
"Hmm, Asabe is truly a wicked witch, but she is playing with the wrong person. I swear to God, I will make Binta a curse to all suitors. I will ensure that whenever anyone comes to seek her hand in marriage, the plans will fall apart at the last minute until they despair. Today, right this very day, into town I go. I know exactly what I need to do!"
"I swear, Inna, that's why I keep telling you anything can happen. Now look, everything has collapsed, and I've lost Sule. Oh, my Sule!" Amina wailed, breaking down in loud tears.
Inna Ladidi glared at her, growing increasingly annoyed:
"Is this Sule your father? Were you born together? Is Sule my husband that you have to sit here wailing like a lunatic and planning to faint right in front of our enemies? Isn't this exact vulnerability why they went inside to laugh at us? How can you break down like this when even her own daughter held it together? I despise cowardice!"
Amina quickly wiped her tears. Deep down, she truly loved Sule now, and she had envisioned herself living comfortably in his house, bringing food for her mother to share while they laughed at Binta. Now that all those dreams had vanished into thin air, she had every right to cry.
"Inna, please forgive me. I've stopped."
"That's much better. You heard what I said I was going to do, didn't you? I am going to take harsh action against them, so I see no reason for you to keep losing your mind."
"Alright, Inna. Whatever action you take against her is fine by me. Whatever happens, they brought this upon themselves with their own money."
"That's my girl! Go inside and grab my hijab and the money I left on the bed. I am going straight to that cunning woman who cast a spell on Sule. I need her to reverse it so that boy's mother doesn't dare lock us out of the house again. From there, I will stop by Lantana's place so she can accompany me to that spiritualist on the hill—word is, he's very potent too."
"What, Inna? That spiritualist on the hill? But people say he uses human sacrifice for his medicines!"
"So what if he does? Are you telling me this just because I'm trying to reclaim your rights?"
"Well, Inna, that's precisely why people avoid him, though his work is undeniably effective."
"Oh, so you know that, yet you stand there arguing with me? Only God knows what Asabe doles out to drive away every woman who enters this house. How many women has she driven out maliciously? There is nothing Asabe wouldn't resort to if it meant achieving her goals! So leave me be, and let me show her that she isn't the only wicked one around..."
Summary
This chapter portrays a toxic domestic environment filled with intense rivalry, manipulation, and desperation.
- The Family Feud: The chapter opens with a bitter exchange of insults between Inna Ladidi and Inna Asabe over the ruined relationship between Amina and her fiancé, Sule. Sule's mother abruptly ended the courtship due to the constant drama and toxicity, leaving Amina devastated and fainting in grief.
- Escalation and Vengeance: While Binta and her mother Asabe celebrate their victory in privacy, Ladidi and a heartbroken Amina plot retaliation. Determined to destroy Binta's romantic prospects and reverse the spell that supposedly took Sule away, Ladidi plans a trip to visit occultists and spiritualists to counter Asabe's perceived witchcraft.
Shift in Perspective (Harun & Humaira): The scene shifts to Tudun Wada Estate in Funtua, Katsina State, where Harun has recently returned home. Humaira, pressured by Inna, reluctantly goes to greet the stern, enigmatic Harun in his quarters. She finds him intimidating and cold, much like his sister Maami described. Meanwhile, Sakina finds herself trapped in a bizarre dynamic with Sadeeq, a man suffering from severe psychological or mystical ailments, whom she is forced to care for under the strict supervision of Mami.
Character Description
- Inna Ladidi: Aggressive, stubborn, and fiercely protective of her status and her daughter Amina. She is quick to anger, deeply prideful, and willing to resort to dark, unorthodox methods (spiritualists and occult practices) to achieve her ends.
- Amina: Ladidi’s daughter, emotional and deeply attached to Sule. Her entire worldview revolves around her failed relationship, making her vulnerable, impressionable, and easily influenced by her mother's aggressive tactics.
- Inna Asabe & Binta: Asabe is cunning and Machiavellian, often driving rivals away, while Binta is equally insolent, defiant, and deeply pleased by Ladidi and Amina's humiliation.
- Humaira: A young, expressive girl who is easily annoyed by domestic friction. She is tasked with running errands and greeting household members like Harun, whom she finds impressively handsome yet overwhelmingly arrogant and aloof.
- Harun: Extremely reserved (miskili), calm, and physically striking with piercing eyes. He dislikes noise and superficial chatter, preferring absolute peace, which makes his homecoming tense given the lively household.
Sakina: Empathetic and cautious, trapped in a difficult caretaking role with Sadeeq while navigating the oppressive and suspicious oversight of Mami.
