Description
"That is what I said, and if you do it, you will be surprised," Dr. Hash said. "This one, daddy, you are the one who should tell him, he is the one giving orders."
"Who do you think you are? Don't you dare do it to her again, otherwise, I swear you will spend the night in the dark room!" Saying this, he stood up and left the place.
Hon. Madatai was sitting with his posters laid out before him, talking to one of his boys in a secluded place like a garden. He was unaware of anyone's presence until he felt a heavy panting behind him. He turned quickly and opened his eyes wide before saying:
"Why do you drop on me like a thief?"
"A politician and a thief are born of the same mother. Who are you?"
"You don't know who I am in this town?"
"I wasn't born to know you. You sent for me, I hope my message reached you?"
Hon. Madatai looked at the man in front of him with someone else and said, "The song is done. It is the one to start the campaign tours with, pay for it to be played constantly on radio stations." He pulled out two million naira and gave it to the musician, saying, "Here is your bride price (payment), I hope the next song will be better than this one. There is another upcoming singer called Kinal A. Awaya."
Happily, the musician took the money and said, "I know Kinal, she really knows how to sing, it's just that she isn't very famous yet."
"Well, let's make her famous. I heard her song 'Ali Wali', she did very well and poured philosophical words into it. Her tongue has sweetness, and it is just fitting that you find her for me."
"I will bring her, Insha Allah, Hon. You have done it all, you have broken the three-tiered dancing mortar (succeeded tremendously). May God protect you, Honorable Member, victory is yours, Hon."
"You can leave, I will hear from you."
"There are spaghetti, wax prints (atamfa), and items from Omo Sugar. Ensure that every local government visited for the campaign gets them. Also, take photos and videos to give to social media guys to spread everywhere. As for the remaining matter of vote-buying, you will discuss it with the P.A. You can leave, Musbah."
Musbah stood up and went out. Right at that moment, he turned and looked at Moh, who was standing there with his face covered in bruises.
"This is not the wilderness, and I am neither wild game nor prey. Have a seat."
"I am not sitting."
"Why?"
"Security. Speak."
"The person you are working for doesn't care about your health. Look at your face, Mutallab."
"Call me Moh or Maidawa, and then we can talk."
Hon. Madatai nodded and said, "I want to let you know that I have joined forces with Dr. Abraham. It is possible he might withdraw from the candidacy he is seeking under his party. If that really happens, we will bring Ali Wali down. If you join hands with me, you will certainly enjoy it."
"What have you planned to do for the youth if you win the election?"
Hon. Madatai raised his head, looked at Moh, smiled, and said, "Improve their education, reduce their school fees, provide them with jobs, and instill in them the ideology and importance of farming."
"What about the thugs? The ones you use to achieve your goals, while you keep your own children away, protecting their upbringing so they have nothing to do with politics? While we, the children of the poor, the sufferers, the thugs, and drunkards, are the ones used for political thuggery today, forgotten tomorrow, and sought after the day after—is that it?"
Hon. Madatai smiled and said, "Mutallab, every victory we achieve is shared with you. To me, governance and politics are as though they were created just for them. I have good plans for you people, your lives will not just be left like that."
"What do you need?"
"You were sent to catch the Manager of the company FS WORLD INVESTMENT COMPANY, right?"
"Which fool told you that?"
Hon. Madatai stood up, pacing around, picked up his campaign poster, looked at his own face on it, and then said, "You are doing the work right in front of us. We politicians sleep with one eye open; we have spread our ears everywhere. Just know that in politics, there is no permanent friend, nor a permanent enemy. Everyone knows how to paddle their own canoe and wash their own wooden slate (allo). As for Ali Wali and me, we walk parallel paths; everyone has what they want. If you kidnap the girl and force her to sign for me so that I can invest capital in that company, that is what I need."
Seeing that Mutallab remained silent, he asked, "Did you not hear?"
"I heard."
"What is your relationship with FGC school?"
"I don't know. The matter of your payment for the job will be known after I do the work. Thank you." Saying this, he left the place.
Being Monday, Safiyyerh dressed early to go to the office. Her body was still not fully healed, but she had no choice; she had to go. Not long after, the MD walked in. After they greeted, with her face quite serious, he rubbed his head and said, "Manager, the town is on fire."
Her eyes were on a document as she slowly turned her swivel chair, acting as if she wouldn't speak, then she asked, "How much do you need, MD?"
"Even five hundred thousand, I will manage."
"I will tell the accountant to give you one million."
He thanked her profusely. She just smiled and asked, "What is even the meaning of FS, MD?"
He suddenly went deadpan, then said, "I cannot give you that answer, Safiyyerh, but I will tell you what you do not know."
She spun her chair again, resting her chin on her hand with a beautiful smile. "I am listening, MD."
"The fingers you saw the other days are true. People's kidneys are being sold in this company along with babies, and drug trafficking takes place here. For the rest of the matter, investigate yourself and you might find out." Saying this, he walked out.
Safiyyerh couldn't move; her breath stopped completely. With great difficulty, she got up, drank some water, and sat back down on the long sofa. Sweat started trickling down her slowly. She loosened her head wrap, closed her eyes, and called upon the name of Allah. There was a knock, and with difficulty, she said, "Come in."
She opened her eyes in surprise to see who had entered. He walked into the office. "No wonder you had to open your eyes wide, Safiyyerh. Are those your eyes?"
She smiled, adjusting her sitting position. "I. Qasim, is that you?"
"It is me, Safiyyerh."
He found a seat and greeted her. She asked, "When did you return to town?"
He smiled and said, "Being a doctor in this town is not easy, Fiyya. How about your headaches?"
She replied, "It's still there."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I have some medications and injections to give you, so you don't end up taking the wrong things. I will be coming with them so you take them in front of me and I administer the injection. You will get well, Insha Allah."
"Thank you, I. Qasim, thank you very much." His phone rang, he looked at it, then stood up, signaling to her that he would be right back. She watched him with her eyes until he went out.
Safiyyerh stared at Daddy like a madwoman out of sheer incomprehension. "Daddy, marriage to Yaya Aliyu, you told me? And Safiyyerh, we are all your children!"
Tears began streaming down her face. She raised her hands to block her ears, shaking her head completely, soaking the prayer hijab she wore with tears. "This confusion you always put me in is about to drive me mad, Daddy. It's not that I am against marriage, but I fail to understand—between me and the Captain, who is your biological child and who is not?"
"You are all my children, Maama. If you truly believe I am a father to you and you want my love and happiness, agree to this marriage, Maama. I will never harm you. I am your father—a good father who chooses good things for his children. Obey me, Safiyyerh, do you hear?"
"I agree, Daddy, I will agree even to something more than this. May Allah make it the best for me," she said, bursting into heavy tears. Quickly, she hurried out, headed to her room, threw herself onto the bed, and let out a heart-wrenching cry as if her soul was leaving her. What kind of thing was this?! She was doomed; what was happening? Marriage—marriage to the Captain! Innah lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. She prayed for Allah to forgive her everything and grant her understanding. With great difficulty, sleep took over her, even though she hadn't eaten.
In the middle of the night, she woke up, finding herself covered in a blanket. She quickly opened her eyes because she hated sleeping in the dark, and the room light had been turned off—no doubt it was Yaya J.
It was around 1:30 AM. She stood up, picked up her car keys and phone, put on a floor-length hijab, opened the door, and went downstairs. There was no one around. She unlocked the door, went outside, and got into the car. The security guard quickly opened the gate, and she drove towards the company. The town was quiet except for streetlights. She looked around the road; no one was following her.
Arriving at the company, she parked the car outside and went inside. She spent a long time talking to the security guard, who said, "Women are brought in during the night and taken out as well. From my investigation, what you only know is the food section, but there is actually a clinic inside this company."
She asked, "Did you take the car plate number or memorize it?"
"No, Your Highness."
"Alright then, thank you, Baba. Take this." She took money and slipped it into his shirt pocket.
As she tried to open the company gate to leave, she suddenly heard the sound of footsteps approaching. She turned quickly and locked eyes with Darma, Goje, and Mangal. A terrible feeling of dread hit her heart when her eyes locked onto his. He hadn't stood up yet; he was sitting on top of the fence, staring at her unblinkingly...
(Promotional blurbs for Mutallab paid book and breast enhancement products omitted for narrative flow)
He stared at her intently from where he sat on the fence, slowly swinging his leg, his face covered with a black cloth. At that moment, the world felt wonderful to him, making him feel as though he were spinning inside a revolving aircraft, which was why he refused to climb down from the fence. Even he didn't know what kind of drug Mangal had brought him.
Fiyya was also staring at him, seeing that he was the only one with his face covered while Goje, Darma, and Mangal surrounded her. She turned and looked at the security guard on duty that night, pointing at Goje.
"And what about these ones, security?"
Directly, he answered her: "I don't know them, but Hajiya, there is danger, we don't know what they came looking for."
Goje stepped close to her, looking her up and down.
"Maidawa, is this the youth? In the pictures, she didn't look this big, she's so petite like a beanstalk, but here public funds have been eaten, she's been drinking milk and Milo, and she's plump." He continued scanning Fiyya up and down while she stood there, smelling the reek of marijuana hitting her nose like she was about to vomit, yet refusing to budge due to the stubbornness and fearlessness typical of Safiyyerh Abdu Marafa.
She hissed under her breath, though fear filled her chest, beating like it wanted to burst out while she kept her large eyes wide open.
"And what is my business with you? What are you looking for in this company? You come here just stinking of weed."
Mutallab opened his big eyes wide again at the sound of her sweet voice inside his head, looking at her lips moving with fury. It was deep night, but the company grounds were brightly lit everywhere.
Mangal swore heavily and hurled insults at Safiyyerh. "You, daughter of your mother! We are the ones stinking of weed? Who else is to blame if not you? Wretched little girl! If I don't give Tiger your raw flesh to eat..."
Safiyyerh turned and looked at Tiger, who had climbed up and sat next to Moh, sticking out his tongue. She pointed a finger at the beast and said, "Something better than my raw flesh! Stop your nonsense. You want to take my body and give it to your bastard dog? If you want money, I can give you some—I have money, you are just looking for trouble, stupid!"
Goje turned to Maidawa and said, "Aren't we going to cut this girl's long tongue down? Her pride is over-reaching! Go and sit down. The trouble is when you smoke this drug, you don't understand anything right now—you probably feel like you're in Saudi Arabia."
Moh closed his eyes and opened them again at Fiyya. Every movement she made was within his sight, though he wasn't fully comprehending it. With a muffled, terrifying voice, he stroked Tiger's head and said, "Shh."
Tiger jumped down, and he too jumped down, landing firmly on his feet with one hand massaging his messed-up hair—the typical look of notorious thugs.
"Wild beast, pay attention. Don't waste time; hoist her over your shoulder and let's bolt before the guards show up, because there is a spy here in white clothes," he pointed at the lonely security guard in white.
Safiyyerh stepped back, rolling her eyes, and said, "Baba, where are the securities? Where are the rest? Call them right now!"
Before Baba could move, Mangal kicked him down to the ground, then stomped his foot over Baba's mouth.
Darma pulled out a knife and said, "You are a rude girl, aren't you? We aren't looking for any other person; it's you we came for. You are the reason we came into this company, and we are going to kidnap you right now. Do you understand and realize? Get in willingly, or I'll pick you up right now and haul you over my shoulder, I swear!"
Fiyya opened her eyes, looking at the knife and Darma himself. She forced a smile, though her heart pounded and fear crept in. She tried to record on her phone, her hands shaking. Summoning courage deep within, she called upon the name of Allah and managed to utter: "Kidnap me? Me, Safiyyerh Abdu Marafa, you are going to abduct me? Are you guys insane, or do you think my husband will let that happen?"
Hearing Safiyyerh's statement made Moh look at her quickly again, fighting back the feelings storming his heart. He felt a sudden boiling rage and marched toward Safiyyerh, his body shaking, his eyes bulging as if they would pop out. With a voice more terrifying than words, and a face so frightening that anyone would see it in nightmares, knife in hand, he stared deep into her eyes. Standing right beside her, he said: "Not your husband, even if your father Abdu Marafa was the one ordered to be taken or killed, I would do it, let alone you."
He bit his lower lip, hissed, and hurled a heavy black scorpion dagger straight into her chest. Sweat poured down her from the intense agony; she couldn't scream or cry. The stench emanating from him felt like it was killing her. Her eyes rolled back, turning red as she stared at his uncovered face. She reached out her hand to touch his face, but felt him drive the knife into her side. She let out a scream, opening her eyes while her body shook violently and blood poured profusely, stopping her hand from reaching his face. Right at that moment, as he raised her over his shoulder, they heard the blaring sirens of security vehicles arriving. He hadn't intended to let her go, but the way Goje forcefully pulled him made him drop her right there on the ground, muttering, "Mutallab!"
One by one, they grabbed the fence and vaulted over it—luckily, this section of the company wall was a low one without broken bottles on top.
There were two types of security forces: those in plain clothes and those in uniforms. Leading them was a man dressed in three-quarter trousers, white shoes, and a black shirt, without even a face cap on his head. He walked straight toward her while the others went to Baba and began taking his statement.
"Baba, calm your heart, nothing will happen to you, Insha Allah. Aside from those thugs who came, we have confirmation that Scorpion is somewhere around here or has arrived."
Slowly, Aliyu turned and looked at Baba upon hearing the questions being asked, then looked away. He reached down, picked up Fiyya, and carried her into a car. After laying her down, he stood looking at the man in the other car who was asking him, "How did you let her come out in the middle of the night like this? She's a woman."
"Sir, youthful exuberance. Thanks for the call."
"Anything for you, Captain Aliyu."
They got into their cars and left the scene, leaving only the F.I.D. operatives behind questioning Baba.
Goje and his gang slipped into a drainage culvert and hid, rolling their eyes nervously. Softly, one of them said, "There's a problem, security agents are everywhere, I swear. And you didn't leave any witnesses, but why on earth did you stab her with a knife? What if she dies?"
Moh kept silent for a moment, then said: "She will not die."
"You stabbed her right in the stomach! Didn't you see how much blood was pouring out when you say she won't die?"
Directly, Moh said, "She won't die."
"You're high, that's why! I thought you were just going to scare her, but you actually stabbed her!"
Startled, Moh looked at Goje with eyes that looked like they might pop out. "Goje, if you repeat to me again that I stabbed her, I will show you ignorance right now—I swear I can kill you."
"Kill me then! There is no trust among thugs anyway, I have to speak out. You were only told to grab her, not kill her."
Mutallab twisted around with lightning speed, grabbed Goje by the neck. Darma quickly stepped in between them and said, "Let's give thanks, don't do that, there is loyalty among us. You, Goje, watch your tongue unless you want to wake up and find yourself in the afterlife."
Moh bit his lip, his head throbbing furiously. Shaking his head, he looked up and growled, "The moment I see her again, I'll kill her, damn your mother!"
They all went quiet around him. They stayed there for a long time before the security forces cleared out and left. One look at Moh was enough to make you turn away because of the way he was panting, seeking an outlet for his boiling rage.
The Following Days:
I. Qasim said, "Since she has left the ICU, Alhamdulillah, she will recover soon."
"Dr. Qasim, don't play those doctor games with us. How is Maama's health? Please, she is my only last hope."
Dr. Qasim smiled and said, "Safiyyerh will get well, Insha Allah. She wasn't stabbed in a spot that would cause permanent damage, but she lost a lot of blood, and her shock multiplied the recovery timeline. Just pray for her."
"Alright, may Allah grant Maama health. Can I go in? For two days we haven't been allowed in, and I feel like she hasn't regained consciousness yet."
I. Qasim shook his head and said, "Daddy, you love Safiyyerh too much. Go in and see her."
Daddy walked right up to the door of the room where she was admitted, wearing the appropriate hospital protective gear. I. Qasim turned and walked away. Daddy stared at Safiyyerh as she struggled, looking pale—she was naturally a very fair-skinned woman, but now she looked even paler. The patient gown was pulled up slightly to her chest, and although she wore nothing underneath except the gown, the wound area where surgery was performed had been exposed. He stared at her, stepped forward slowly, took her hand, and began praying earnestly for her recovery. His heart felt heavy; if he lost Maama, he didn't know how he would survive it.
"May Allah grant you health, Maama. Please, cut down on your stubbornness and rushing into matters—look at how you nearly ruined your life! Safiyyerh, I am not ready, I am simply not ready, Safiyyerh." He gripped her hand, seeing her lips moving, though he couldn't hear what she was saying.
He stood up and walked out, continuing to pray inwardly for her healing and relief.
After stepping out, he took out his phone and called Aliyu. As soon as he picked up, Daddy said, "Aliyu, where are you? She has been brought out of the ICU, but you are nowhere around. I don't like this. The past is not the present; Safiyyerh's status changed a long time ago."
"May Allah grant relief," Aliyu simply uttered into the phone and then went silent.
Daddy's anger flared up again. He felt as though he had made a mistake by arranging Safiyyerh's marriage to Aliyu and handing over the responsibility of her life to him, thinking he would look after her affairs, but that might not be the case at all. A lot of things weighed heavily on his mind, robbing him of peace and adequate sleep. Once Safiyyerh moved into her husband's house, he would have to assume the full responsibility that Almighty God placed upon a husband.
Ummi looked at Daddy with reddened eyes and said, "I have been watching my daughter's life heading toward destruction. You've done many things, Professor; I kept my mouth shut thinking everything you did was right. But my heart cannot take this. How old is Safiyyerh anyway? She should just quit the job at this company that I don't even understand. She is too young for this. I am not ready to lose her."
Daddy remained silent, watching Ummi cry.
"Get up, let's go, it's late."
She looked at him quickly, wiping her tears, and asked, "And I don't understand what you mean by 'let's go'—go where?"
"Well, you know patients don't sleep in this hospital ward overnight, only the patient is permitted to stay."
Before he could finish speaking, she was already shaking her head at him. "I don't think I can leave this hospital with Safiyyerh here alone. I don't even understand this arrangement. Talk to them, can I sleep right here? I'll manage."
Daddy walked ahead, saying, "Don't make me repeat myself to you."
Reluctantly, she stood up, took one last glance at Fiyya, and walked out.
Right before visiting hours officially closed, Yaya J sat for a long time in front of Fiyya, looking at her face. Days prior, he would have held her hand in his, showering her with comforting words and prayers, but now he couldn't even look at her, let alone pray aloud. Eventually, he stood up and left. Both Awais and Dr. Hash also came in, though they had no certainty whether she was sleeping or just unresponsive.
