Description

It is rare to see Lion get involved when a family dispute breaks out outside; he never does that. He simply stays silent and watches them. If they keep going, he stays calm until he figures out who is in the right among them. That is why he always makes the right decisions, because he operates with calm, wisdom, and sharp intelligence. Even now, he just watched them while they argued, filtering their words until he saw Areef about to slap her, which is when he intervened. In his heart, he deeply felt that they certainly had a connection to Gwaggo. Even if she wasn't their mother, they definitely had a relationship with her. Furthermore, after looking closely at her, he realized she was the one he had seen with Josephine—but where? That he couldn't remember or figure out, but it was definitely her that he looked at alongside Josephine. And she was the face he saw reflected in Rimsha. Many times, when he looked at Rimsha's face, his heart would skip a beat. Whose blood could be pulling at him through Rimsha's face if not Gwaggo's blood? He remained calm, without panicking, sinking deep into thought while using his intelligence and wisdom with confidence to uncover the truth.

Just as he said, each of them sat down on the sofa. It was only then that they noticed Barrister Naurat watching them intently. She too had settled down, wondering who among them was telling the truth.

Completely terrified, Abba and Rimsha's Daddy both spoke in unison, "Mummy?!"

Barrister Naurat nodded at them, indicating "yes, it is her," smiling while placing a single finger over her lips to signal them to keep quiet just as Lion had said. That was what she had wanted to tell them anyway; she wanted everyone to calm down so the truth could be found.

In a soft voice, she said to Lion, "My grandson, find a place and sit down too. A'isha, come sit close to me so I can ask you." Lion didn't argue with her at all, because deep down he felt a genuine love for this old woman.

He sat on the sofa, gently stroking his smooth cheeks. Barrister Naurat motioned to Rimsha to come sit as well, since Rimsha was the only one among her grandchildren she immediately recognized, which is why she called her to sit close. Rimsha didn't hesitate; she walked over to her grandmother, sat right beside her, and leaned slightly against her shoulder—Rimsha, the ultimate lover of comfort. Daddy also went back to sit down, and Akila and the others found places and sat. Gwaggo also moved to sit close to the Barrister, huffing and puffing in anger.

Calmly, the Barrister began to speak: "A'isha, as far as I know, you weren't married, and you still weren't married by the time I left Nigeria! But now, look at these strapping young men you claim are your children—when did you get married to give birth to them? And where did you even meet this Dr. William? If it's true that they are your children, then I want you to tell us the story of how they became yours. Before we decide what to say, you can't just walk up and tell us they're your children and expect us to just believe you. You know this is baffling, so now give us an explanation." The Barrister knew very well that Gwaggo's words were true with no lies in them, because she knew her children inside out and knew the upbringing she gave them. However, she didn't show Gwaggo that she believed her; instead, she acted as though they didn't believe her. True to the dignity of a fair-minded elder, the Barrister had lived a good life, a truly wonderful person whom everyone grew to love.

The entire living room fell silent, everyone simply waiting for Gwaggo's explanation. Lion leaned his head against the back of the sofa, watching them with his eyes.

As if she didn't want to speak, she started by saying, "Mummy, before I begin telling you the story, I want Deen, Maik, and Azharuddin to be called here. I want everyone to come because each of them has a question I will ask during my narrative."

Barrister Naurat looked at Rimsha's Daddy and told him to call all of them so they could arrive right away without wasting time, to sort everything out. "Okay," he answered respectfully. Swiftly, he pulled out his phone and began searching for their numbers, since he had them saved in his email.

He was successful and reached all of them. Without wasting time, he delivered the Barrister's message, emphasizing that they should hurry.

In a very short time, there they were, arriving. Abbi and Jelly's Daddy arrived first, followed by Azharuddin Bature, each coming with his family upon hearing that the Barrister was looking for them. Oh boy, today was going to be dramatic! Everyone had arrived; only Hjy Batoola and Dr. Nawid's Aafia were missing.

Everyone settled in the living room per Barrister Naurat's instructions. Lion kept watching them too, because this was a major case that required study to single out who was telling the truth. Areef was also eyeing them; as a CIA officer, he was trying to figure out who was telling the truth using his intellect and wisdom. As for Aseef, he rested his head on Rimsha Daddy's lap because his head was aching him severely—the poor guy hated noise, and a sudden, excruciating headache had struck him.

Uncle Herry and the others just watched them all, but if you looked at their faces, you would see terror and fear written all over them. What were they so terrified of? Dr. William was much the same, though he had more resilience and mental toughness to endure anything. Jay and John weren't phased at all; they felt like they were being harassed because they refused to believe what Gwaggo was saying, looking at her as if she were a lunatic.

Barrister Naurat cleared her throat before speaking calmly, with dignity, showing profound love and happiness at being back in Nigeria today and among her family. "A'isha, Zahradeen and the others have arrived. Now tell us, where did you know this man, and how did you come to have children with him?!"

Abbi and the others were completely flooded with astonishment at seeing Barrister Naurat, but she stopped them from speaking because this case took precedence right now. Everyone had to swallow their shock and excitement, keeping quiet as they listened to the Barrister.

Gwaggo looked at Abbi and began to speak calmly. "Deen, can you recognize this man?" She asked, pointing at Dr. William with her hand. Abbi remained silent for a few minutes, not exceeding five. Then he said, "Of course, at Harvard University, Washington DC, right?" She nodded in confirmation. He answered yes, that he remembered him though he had forgotten his name. Blown minds! At that point, the TRIPLETS all stared intently at Gwaggo and Abbi, wanting to understand something.

Do not forget they were speaking in English, because the people from Washington, from William Jacob to his family, didn't understand a single word of Hausa.

"That's right, Deen. If you can remember, isn't this the man you and I once had a fight with because he slapped me and I retaliated?" Again, Abbi stayed quiet for a moment before answering, "Yes, that happened!"

Barrister Naurat stopped them, saying, "A'isha, give us the account of what happened from the beginning. Tell us everything in full detail. We are not playing games here, everyone is waiting for you!" She paused briefly, took a deep breath, and began to speak calmly:

SOME YEARS AGO... HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

She was sitting on one of the fine chairs in the garden near the surgeon department. She was silent, her full attention focused on a beautiful book in her hands, deeply engrossed in reading it. Her body was clad in black jeans and a pure white T-shirt. She wore no headscarf, letting her Naurat-style hair flow freely down her back. At that time, she didn't think much of Nigeria; she was as fair-complexioned as Naurat. No one could look at her and say she wasn't a white woman, due to her radiant fairness and the beauty God blessed her with, along with those large, inherited heritage eyes from Dr. Salman. Students were bustling back and forth around her, but she acted as though she was completely alone, not even lifting her head to look at anyone. Clearly, she was riding high on self-importance at the time.

True to Westerners, they had no problem sitting close to someone or talking to them if they were part of the fold; they carried no arrogance. A beautiful white girl sat next to her and greeted her, wishing her a good break. Seeing that the white girl greeted her politely, she responded politely as well.

The white girl extended her hand, saying, "My name is Cherish Daniel, what about you?" She replied shortly, "A'isha Salman Sultan." "Wow, are you a Muslim?" she asked with a face full of surprise. Gwaggo nodded to confirm. Cherish was very pleased, and they struck up a friendship. Their friendship was admirable; their religious differences didn't stop them from sticking together. When it was time for worship, Gwaggo would go to the mosque, and since Cherish loved her, she would accompany her right to the door of the mosque and wait for her. If it was church day, Gwaggo would bid her farewell respectfully.

They remained like this for a whole year. Cherish visited Gwaggo's house frequently, while Gwaggo also visited hers from time to time, because Gwaggo was proud and loved her privacy. One day, Abbi came to visit her. She was thrilled by her younger brother's visit, since she was older than Abbi. That day, they spent the whole night awake, chatting about home.

Cherish didn't know about Abbi's arrival because she hadn't come to Gwaggo's house that day, nor had Gwaggo gone to hers. It was only the next day when Cherish came over to head to school together that she saw Abbi. Right then, she declared that there was nobody in the world she loved more than Abbi! He wasn't very old at the time, and Gwaggo wasn't very old either, but she was older than him. After Abba came she, then Abbi, followed by Rimsha's Daddy and Anaya's Daddy.

Gwaggo would just laugh at Cherish because she kept saying she loved Abbi, while he wore a scowl and frowned his face like someone offered something terrible. Right then, he said he would follow Gwaggo to see their school. At that time, he and Abba were at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, having returned to Nigeria and left Russia behind. Abba was in a relationship with their Ammi Imran at that time; they loved each other deeply, and their parents knew.

Gwaggo didn't live permanently in Nigeria; she was a Washington DC soul. She hadn't even lived with them much in Russia. She was the one who chose Harvard University, and Dr. Salman approved it. Naurat also gave her full backing, because in their view, sending children to study anywhere posed no problem at all. At first, she was supposed to travel with Abba, but later Abba said he changed his mind and would stay in Nigeria to continue his studies, as Nigeria felt much better to him.

Gwaggo never poked her nose into anyone's business; she wouldn't even lift her eyes to look at anyone in the school. Frequently, she kept hearing talk about the "dangerous boss" of their class, who happened to be at the top of everything. He was a genius, fiercely proud in academics, never joking with studies, possessing knowledge and sharp intelligence as if he had created himself. She never knew who he was, but she vowed that this time, by God, she would outrank him and surpass him in studies. Everyone acknowledged him as number one, so she wanted to shatter his record and set her own, despite hearing endless praise for his brilliant mind in school. Besides that, he was number one for being hot-tempered, aggressive, keeping to himself, but if you crossed his path by mistake, you would curse your existence because he would make you regret coming to the world. He had no manners when provoked. She heard stories of him often, but she didn't know him and didn't care to know him! She only focused on her own path.

After they went to school, Abbi sat in the garden playing with his phone while they went into class for a lecture. When they came out of the lecture, Cherish suggested they go buy some food before heading to Abbi. "Okay," Gwaggo answered. Side by side, they walked to their super mall.

Gwaggo only picked two cups of juice. Cherish, on the other hand, grabbed every sweet treat in sight—she didn't even spare chips! She took things to her heart's content, but she took everything in pairs: one for herself, one for Abbi, as if he told her he would eat.

They finished shopping and turned back, each holding her things to head to the garden. As Gwaggo turned, she collided with someone, causing all the juice in the cups she held to spill all over him, washing him from his chest down to his flat stomach. The annoying part was that his clothes were pure white, and her juice was orange colored.

He looked down at his body, wearing dark sunglasses while dressed in pure white jeans and a white T-shirt. Around his neck hung a massive gold chain reaching down to his chest—the kind worn by big shots full of self-importance. His ears had small earrings, and right above his earlobe, he wore a tiny, blindingly brilliant solid gold stud. His right arm wore an extremely expensive luxury watch, while his other arm wore big-shot arm chains. At a single glance, you could tell he went to the gym because his physique showed well-defined, muscular lines. He had the build of a complete, healthy man full of vigor. At a glance, you knew he was a wealthy young man from an elite background; from top to bottom, everything on him was ultra-expensive, nothing worth less than 1 million. Because his T-shirt had very short sleeves, a scorpion tattoo on his upper arm was exposed, glowing bright red like fresh blood, with the black outline of the tattoo standing out sharply. No lie, he was supremely handsome, top-tier class, and intellect!

Gwaggo looked at his body too before uttering a brief "sorry" with an attitude of total indifference. Cherish had long since shrunk away into a corner, completely frozen and terrified out of her mind. She clearly recognized the guy well and was deathly afraid of him.

Gwaggo stepped past him to walk away. After that brief "sorry" and indifferent attitude, she said nothing else and headed to leave the place, since she too carried a high sense of self-importance. Furious, he spun around and struck her with a vicious slap that sent her staggering and nearly falling. Blank! She felt everything stop; she couldn't process anything due to that slap. She saw things flashing across her eyes and a flash of light like electricity. She remained that way for a few seconds before vertigo started sweeping over her.

His sweet, angry voice brought her back to her senses as he stated, "What kind of beast are you?! Do you have no brain in your head?!" He spoke calmly. Hearing that brought her back fully. She lifted her large, red-rimmed eyes—red from the slap she had taken—and fixed her gaze on his furious face. Even though she was terrified, seeing his grim, intimidating presence and feeling scared, it didn't stop her from narrowing her eyes and hitting him back with an equally stunning, vicious slap.

Cherish—who wasn't even the one slapped—dropped the tray of food she was holding, and it shattered on the floor out of sheer, mad panic. She had never imagined anyone could dare slap the "dangerous boss" in this school; even tough guys feared him, let alone women. She bolted away to go tell Abbi what was happening to Gwaggo.

The crowd gathered there was utterly shocked, because most of them knew who he was. He was ruthless, backed by his powerful parents who could take anyone to court for his sake. He was the son of influential people with a powerful voice in the country; even the president at that time was his father's older brother, which was why he did whatever he pleased.

No one had ever dared point a finger at him in that school, yet today, a woman had washed his handsome, reddish, smooth face with a slap in public! Total disaster—even the parents who birthed him had never struck him, coddling him like a baby because he was an over-spoiled child.

As for Gwaggo, her mind was completely at ease because she didn't even know who he was. In fact, she simply tried to brush past him again to leave. Filled with fury and anger, his foot shot out and swept her legs, sending her crashing flat to the floor.

He pulled out his expensive leather belt with the intent to beat her severely, which coincided with the arrival of Abbi and Cherish. Cherish stayed back, while Abbi rushed forward, grabbed Dr. William's belt, and demanded to know what was going on.

Dr. William slapped Abbi with a violent blow as well, because he was completely enraged at that moment. His heart was filled with intense anger; he was blind with rage. He started raining belt lashes on them. The rest of the crowd rushed over; despite fearing him, they begged him to stop because he was hitting a woman. The real Dr. William never hit women—everyone knew that was his code, and he taught Lion that hitting a woman is degrading. But she had insulted his intelligence, and he hated being undermined. To make matters worse, she had slapped him in public.

It took immense effort to hold him back and drag him away from her; otherwise, he intended to give her such a brutal beating that she wouldn't be able to move until someone lifted her up. Angrily, he hurled the belt away and stalked off, huffing heavily. After he left, people helped her up, and feeling weak, they left the area. Deep inside her heart, she vowed by God that she would not let him go—she was going to teach him a lesson!

Abbi grew extremely worried, but she didn't care at all. Her lifestyle at that time was just like Jehan's—no difference—because she stayed out of everyone's business, but if you crossed hers, that fight wouldn't end until she saw victory. That was who she was.

Abbi spent two weeks with her. From that day on, she never laid eyes on Dr. William until the day Abbi returned home. After dropping Abbi off at the airport, she returned and went shopping to buy some necessities she lacked at home.

She dressed in white jeans and a pure white high-neck T-shirt, styled her hair, tied a small white handkerchief over it, and slipped into white high heels. From top to bottom, she wore all white. Grabbing only her phone, ATM card, and car keys, she stepped out. Living on the tenth floor, she took the elevator down. Everyone on their floor minded their own business, with zero interference. She walked to her gorgeous car, got in, and drove away.

She didn't stop until she reached a massive supermarket. Parking quickly, she stepped out of the car and headed inside. She began shopping heavily, without holding back, as if money was no object—Dr. Salman had already dumped a substantial amount of money into her account.

As she shopped, strolling around the aisles, turning a corner by the lotions section, she collided with someone. The massive phone in his person's hand dropped to the floor. Without looking up to see who it was, she knelt down and picked up the phone. As she lifted it to hand it back to him, they locked eyes. Today, just like that day, he was wearing dark sunglasses and dressed entirely in white, matching her style completely.

Recognizing who it was, she hardened her face like a thundercloud, and with extreme anger, she dropped the phone back to the floor. She gave him a cold look from head to toe, pulled her shopping cart past him, and walked away. He stood frozen, unable to stop her, and unable to bend down to pick up his phone. He was deep in thought about what to do to this girl, because she had done something to him that even the parents who birthed him had never done—nobody had ever slapped him except her. He shouldn't let her go; he needed to punish her so severely that she would prefer death over him!

He stood there for a long time thinking before walking away. Arrogance, pride, and the luxury in which he lived stopped him from stooping to pick up his phone. He walked out to his car. Two massive bodyguards in black suits stood by his car door, dressed entirely in black. Arriving, he ordered them to leave, huffing heavily, his heart burning with rage...

Summary

This passage opens with Lion calmly observing a chaotic family argument, using his quiet intelligence to deduce that Gwaggo is somehow connected to the mysterious women in their lives (mentioning Josephine and Rimsha). Barrister Naurat arrives, commands everyone to sit, and orchestrates a formal family gathering—calling in Abbi, Azharuddin, and others—to confront Gwaggo about her claims regarding her children and her past history with Dr. William.

Gwaggo is then prompted to narrate her past at Harvard University years ago. She recounts how she lived an independent, self-assured life until she accidentally spilled juice on the arrogant and ruthless campus "dangerous boss," Dr. William. Unaware of who he was and refusing to back down from his aggressive entitlement, Gwaggo slapped him in public after he struck her. The flashback details the violent clash, Abbi's intervention, and a subsequent chance encounter at a supermarket where their paths crossed again, setting the stage for deep-seated conflict and unresolved tension.
